Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has set a new record for cargo handling in its 138-year history. In the fiscal year 2025-26, KPT surpassed its previous high of 54.685 million tonnes set in FY 2017-18.
This achievement comes as Pakistani ports, especially Karachi, have become a safe and attractive trade hub. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to US-Iran tensions led many global shipping lines to redirect vessels to Pakistan. This caused a big rise in transshipment activity.
Last year (FY 2024-25), KPT handled 53.951 million tonnes. The new record shows major improvement in port efficiency and capacity. KPT also achieved a record in container handling with over 2.65 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
The minister praised KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (retired) Shahid Ahmed and the entire team for their hard work, teamwork, and professional management. He said the milestone reflects the success of government reforms to modernize ports and boost trade.
Pakistan is working to expand port capacity, improve logistics, and attract more investment. Recent steps include an MoU with Saudi Arabia for developing a maritime business district on KPT’s 140‑acre waterfront land. The arrival of the first fully transshipment vessel also marked an important achievement.
This record is a big win for Pakistan’s economy. It strengthens the country’s position as a regional maritime hub, supports trade growth, and creates opportunities for more business and jobs.
