World Bank Approves $700m Program to Support Pakistan’s Fiscal Reforms and Public Services

The World Bank has approved $700 million in financing to help Pakistan strengthen its economic system and improve public services through a new long-term reform program.

The initiative, known as the Pakistan Public Resources for Inclusive Development, Multiphase Programmatic Approach (PRID-MPA) is designed to support both federal and provincial governments as they work to improve revenue generation and spending discipline.

This multi-year program will be part of a larger $1.35 billion reform package, which will be implemented step by step.

Under this structure, the federal government will receive $600 million while $100 million will go towards reform efforts in Sindh. Pakistan will receive the remaining funding as it progresses through the program.

World Bank officials explained that the PRID-MPA will help Pakistan collect more domestic taxes, manage its finances more responsibly, and deliver improved services in areas such as education, health care and climate resilience.

One major aspect of the program is that funds will only be released once specific goals are achieved, ensuring transparency and accountability.

At the federal level, the program will support reforms to enhance tax policies, modernize financial planning and build stronger data systems that can guide government decisions. It will also back improvements in tax administration, subsidy management, and national statistics.

In Sindh, the focus will be on increasing revenue, improving financial management, speeding up payments, and strengthening data-driven governance. Funding will also help ensure fairer allocation for schools and primary health services.

According to the World Bank, these reforms are vital for helping Pakistan stabilize its economy, expand fiscal space, and improve public welfare.

The program is expected to support long-lasting growth, stronger governance, and better outcomes for citizens across the country.
