Pakistan Moves Closer to 5G Rollout After Successful Spectrum Auction

PTA is preparing to take another important step toward launching 5G mobile services in Pakistan.

The authority will organize the Spectrum Auction Assignment Stage on March 12, 2026, to determine the exact frequency positions that will be allocated to telecom operators.

The event will take place at the PTA Auditorium in Islamabad. During this stage, the authority will finalize how the spectrum blocks purchased by telecom companies will be placed within each frequency band.

This technical process is necessary before operators can begin planning and deploying their 5G networks across the country.

Earlier this week, Pakistan successfully completed its first major 5G spectrum auction, raising about $507 million.

The auction involved the sale of 480 MHz of spectrum, out of a targeted 597 MHz. The process took place in three rounds and marked a major milestone for the country’s digital development.

Several major telecom operators participated in the auction. Jazz emerged as the largest buyer by securing 190 MHz of spectrum across multiple frequency bands. Ufone obtained 180 MHz, while Zong secured 110 MHz.

According to PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman, the assignment stage will define the exact frequency positions within each band.

Once this process is completed, telecom companies will be able to start preparing for the rollout of next-generation mobile networks.

Officials say the successful auction and spectrum allocation will help Pakistan move toward faster internet speeds, improved digital connectivity, and the expansion of modern online services for businesses and citizens across the country.
