Islamabad Plans AI-Controlled Smart Traffic Signals to Reduce Congestion

Islamabad is set to upgrade its traffic system with AI-controlled smart signals at major intersections. This new system will replace old fixed-time traffic lights with intelligent technology that changes signal timing according to real-time traffic conditions.

The plan was reviewed in a high-level meeting chaired by Director General Safe City and DIG Traffic Muhammad Haroon Joiya. Officials from Islamabad Safe City, Capital Development Authority (CDA), and One Network attended the meeting and were directed to complete the project on time. It is part of the larger Safe City Expansion Project.

Traditional traffic lights follow preset timers and often cause unnecessary delays. The new AI system will use high-definition cameras and smart computer programs to check vehicle numbers on each road. It will automatically give more green light time to busy roads and reduce waiting on quieter ones. This is expected to reduce traffic jams, save fuel, and lower pollution from vehicles waiting at signals.

The project will also improve road safety and help police enforce traffic rules better through AI monitoring. It will connect with the existing Safe City cameras for faster response to accidents and violations.

Many modern cities around the world already use adaptive AI traffic systems with good results. Islamabad’s move is a big step toward smarter and more efficient city management. Officials hope the system will make daily commuting easier for residents and support the capital’s growing population and vehicle numbers.

Once fully implemented, the AI traffic upgrade is likely to serve as a model for other cities in Pakistan facing similar traffic problems.
