The federal government has launched a Rs 75 billion project to convert 27,000 agricultural tube wells in Balochistan from regular electricity to solar power. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the plan while sharing the government’s wider development goals for the province.
The project aims to cut high electricity bills for farmers and give them a steadier power supply for irrigation. It will also ease pressure on Pakistan’s national power grid and support cleaner, renewable energy use. Balochistan relies heavily on tube wells for farming, so the switch to solar is expected to boost crop production and make agriculture more sustainable.
Alongside the solar initiative, the prime minister said the government is speeding up other key projects in education, water supply, and social welfare. These include building new schools and colleges, increasing scholarships for students, improving water systems, and finishing long-delayed public schemes.
Shehbaz Sharif stressed that balanced development across all provinces remains a top priority. He confirmed that Balochistan will continue to receive strong federal support to grow its economy, upgrade infrastructure, and expand access to basic services.
Officials believe sustained investment in farming, education, water, and roads will unlock the province’s potential. The moves are designed to create jobs and raise living standards for local communities.
The solar tube well programme marks one of the largest recent efforts to modernise agriculture in Balochistan through clean energy.
