Punjab has launched a new cashless payment system for public transport. Commuters can now pay fares for metro and electric bus services using the eTransit Punjab App or the T-Cash Card, without needing cash.
The Punjab Information Technology Board introduced the system together with the Punjab Transport Department and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority. Officials said the change will replace cash payments and physical tokens with digital transactions. This should make fare collection faster, safer and more convenient for passengers.
Under the new unified digital platform, travellers can simply use the T-Cash Card or the mobile app to pay. The move is expected to cut waiting times and improve the overall travel experience on public buses and trains.
In a related step, the Lahore Mass Transit Authority has stopped the old token and transit card system for the Orange Line Train, Speedo buses and Metro Bus. LMTA In-charge Uzair Shah confirmed that previous cards can no longer be used. Any remaining balance will not be refunded. Passengers who return the old cards will only get back the Rs 130 security deposit at designated stations.
The new cashless system marks a clear shift toward digital payments in Punjab’s public transport network. Authorities hope it will modernise daily commuting and reduce cash handling problems.
