Pakistan has achieved a historic milestone in its blue economy as seafood exports crossed the $500 million mark for the first time ever. This remarkable success highlights the growing strength of the country’s fisheries sector and its increasing contribution to national foreign exchange earnings.
In the first half of the current fiscal year, seafood exports showed impressive growth compared to the previous year. Frozen fish continued to lead the exports, while shrimps, prawns, and cuttlefish also performed strongly. The consistent rise in demand from international buyers has boosted confidence in Pakistan’s seafood industry.
China remains the biggest importer of Pakistani seafood, but the country has successfully expanded its reach to several new markets. Exports have grown significantly to Thailand, the UAE, Japan, Russia, and European Union countries. This diversification is reducing dependence on a single market and opening new doors for exporters.
The government is now focusing on establishing modern seafood processing zones and encouraging value-added products such as ready-to-cook items and packaged seafood. These steps are expected to increase earnings and create more jobs in the coastal regions of Sindh and Balochistan.
