Researchers are adapting an “electric curtain” or electrodynamic dust shield (EDS) originally created to protect solar panels from moon dust. This transparent system uses electric fields to automatically remove dust without water, brushes, or manual cleaning.
Lunar dust is a major challenge for space missions because it sticks to surfaces and reduces efficiency. NASA’s Kennedy Space Center has worked on this technology for years. The electric curtain consists of thin, transparent electrodes that create a traveling electric field. When activated, it lifts charged dust particles and moves them away from the panel surface.
A recent study published in the journal Renewable Energy tested this technology on Earth. It showed promising results for solar farms in dusty and desert areas where dust buildup can cut energy output by 20-30% or more. The system is low-power and can run on the solar panel’s own energy.
