Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses across the province over the next five years. This major initiative aims to improve public transport, reduce pollution, and promote eco-friendly travel.
In the first phase, 1,500 electric buses will be deployed in 91 tehsils covering major divisions including Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, and others. Of these, 189 buses are ready for immediate launch, while 488 more are expected to arrive from China later this month.
The Punjab government has also started local assembly of electric buses. This step will create jobs, cut import costs, and build local manufacturing skills. The buses will offer modern, comfortable, and affordable rides to people in both urban and rural areas.
The plan includes e-bikes, e-taxis, and e-rickshaws to make transport cleaner and more efficient. Officials say this will help lower carbon emissions and fight air pollution in big cities.
Maryam Nawaz directed quick action to start services soon. She stressed that Punjab is now not just using but also making electric vehicles.
