Punjab’s potato farmers are celebrating good news. Russia has lifted its ban on potato imports from Punjab province. This decision lets Pakistani exporters send potatoes to Russia again, starting from July 7. Officials say 101 Pakistani exporters can now resume shipments.
Russia had banned imports in May 2025 over concerns about pests like the potato tuber moth and tomato wilt virus. Pakistan worked hard to prove its potatoes were safe. After checking Pakistan’s plant health system, Russia agreed to reopen trade.
Punjab grows most of Pakistan’s potatoes, nearly 98% of the country’s total. This year, the province is expected to produce around 12 million tons, creating a big surplus. The ban had hurt farmers, causing lower prices and losses at home. Now, exports to Russia will help sell extra potatoes, raise farmer incomes, and keep local prices stable.
