Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has chosen Tewolde Gebremariam, the former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, to guide its turnaround. This move is part of efforts to revive the national carrier after its privatization.
Tewolde served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines from 2011 to 2022. Under his leadership, the airline grew into Africa’s largest carrier. It expanded its fleet from around 33 to over 130 aircraft, increased passengers from 3 million to 12 million, and boosted annual revenue significantly. The airline also joined Star Alliance and built a strong infrastructure. His success in turning Ethiopia into a major global player brings high hopes for PIA.
The appointment comes after the Arif Habib Group-led consortium took management control of PIA following its privatization. The new owners plan fresh investments in fleet expansion, aircraft modernization, staff training, and route growth. The goal is to improve service quality, reliability, and financial health.
PIA has faced challenges for years, including financial losses, an aging fleet, and reputation issues. Bringing in an experienced leader like Tewolde is seen as a strategic step to introduce best practices from a successful African airline model.
