Pakistan has taken a big step forward in technology. The country has officially started 5G services on 449 telecom towers across 22 cities. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shared this update with the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology.
This rollout marks the beginning of faster and smarter internet for millions of people. Major operators like Jazz and Zong have already launched commercial 5G services in key areas. Jazz started with around 180 sites in cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, and Faisalabad. Zong has gone live in over 16 cities, including the same major hubs. Karachi currently leads with 50 active 5G sites, while smaller cities like Hyderabad have fewer.
5G is much faster than 4G. Users can expect download speeds many times higher, smoother video streaming, quicker downloads, and better online gaming. It also offers very low latency, meaning less delay in data transfer. This will help in many areas of life.
In education, students can join high-quality online classes without buffering. Businesses can use faster connections for video calls, cloud work, and e-commerce. Healthcare may benefit from remote consultations and better data sharing. Farmers and industries could use 5G for smart monitoring and automation in the future.
The government raised over $500 million from the 5G spectrum auction in March 2026. This money will support further network growth. Operators plan to add more towers soon to expand coverage.
However, challenges remain. Only a small percentage of total towers are 5G-ready now, and full nationwide coverage will take time. Users will need 5G-compatible phones to enjoy the benefits.
