The Punjab government has started a new community project called “Sasti Nahi Muft Sabzi, Sanjhi Sabzi”. The aim is to provide free seasonal vegetables to people facing high inflation and high food prices. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif ordered this initiative to help families and use empty government land for growing food.
The project began in Muzaffargarh district. Vegetables are now growing on 140 plots covering 139 kanals of land, including rooftops of government buildings in cities and open rural areas. Local people, including a Christian community village, have joined in. They grow extra vegetables and share them with neighbors for free based on family needs.
This community model turns unused land into useful gardens. It helps reduce the burden of high vegetable prices. Food inflation in Pakistan reached about 9.4% in June 2026, with many households struggling with the costs of daily items. By growing food locally, the scheme reduces transport costs and makes fresh produce available free of charge.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the Muzaffargarh success and directed all deputy commissioners across Punjab to start similar programs in their districts. The goal is to expand this model province-wide and create more community food sources.
Officials say the project promotes self-help and teamwork. It supports the government’s efforts to fight poverty and inflation through practical steps. Early results look promising as residents already receive free vegetables. If successful, it could inspire more green initiatives using public spaces.
This scheme is part of broader welfare programs under the current Punjab government to improve daily life for ordinary citizens during tough economic times.
