Pakistan’s Ports Witness Record Cargo Surge, Strengthening Role in Global Trade

Pakistan’s major ports, including Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port, have experienced a historic rise in cargo handling.

Transshipment volumes have increased by more than 1,400%, mainly due to global shipping disruptions in the Middle East.

Karachi Port has shown especially strong performance. In just 24 days, it handled 8,313 containers, which has already exceeded last year’s total of 8,300 containers. This highlights the growing importance of Pakistan’s ports in international trade and logistics.

The increase in activity is also linked to improved operational efficiency at key terminals. Facilities such as South Asia Pakistan Terminal, Hutchison Port, and Karachi Gateway Terminal have played an important role in managing the higher cargo flow smoothly and efficiently.

In addition, revised transshipment policies and ongoing infrastructure development under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor have supported this growth.

These improvements have made Pakistan’s ports more attractive for global shipping companies looking for reliable and efficient routes.

Officials believe that this surge reflects Pakistan’s rising position as a regional trade hub. The country is benefiting from changing global trade patterns and is becoming an important link in international supply chains.
