Pakistan is moving fast toward cleaner roads. The government plans to have 2.2 million electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads by 2030. This goal was shared in a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production.
This target is part of the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–30. The policy wants 30% of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. It also aims to boost local manufacturing and cut Pakistan’s heavy dependence on imported fuel.
So far, Pakistan has made good progress. More than 12,800 electric vehicles and nearly 160,000 electric motorcycles have already been produced locally. To help people buy EVs, the government is giving Rs. 9 billion in subsidies. Buyers of electric motorcycles can get Rs. 80,000 off.
The benefits are big. The shift to EVs could save about 2.07 billion litres of fuel every year, bring in $1 billion in foreign exchange savings, and cut carbon emissions by 4.5 million tonnes. The government also plans to build 3,000 EV charging stations by 2030.
Experts say strong policy support, clear rules, and more private investment are needed to reach these goals. This move will help reduce pollution and create jobs in the growing EV industry.
