The Punjab government has set aside Rs. 40 billion in the 2026-27 budget to build a strong charging network for electric buses. This big investment will support the province’s plan to expand green public transport and reduce pollution.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the charging facilities will be developed in phases. For now, new electric buses will use electricity from WAPDA. The dedicated network is important because the current charging setup can only handle 41 buses, while the fleet is growing fast.
Punjab already operates 400 electric buses in 18 districts. The government aims to reach 1,900 buses this year. Pakistan is expected to receive 488 more electric buses by the end of August 2026. These will be deployed across different areas gradually.
In the first phase, electric buses will start on 13 new routes in smaller districts like Khanewal, Khushab, Bhakkar, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, and Hafizabad. Khushab will get 15 buses, while others will receive nine each. More districts including Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Multan will also get buses soon.
Electric buses help lower fuel costs and cut harmful emissions. With better charging infrastructure, the province hopes to provide reliable and affordable transport to more people.
