Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad has taken a big step in heart care. The hospital launched the country’s first public-sector Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) program. Federal Minister for National Health Services Syed Mustafa Kamal officially started this program.
Under the new program, doctors successfully treated four patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF), a common irregular heart rhythm problem. This condition can lead to stroke and heart failure. The patients included people from Islamabad, Mirpur, and Mardan who had symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
PFA is one of the world’s latest technologies for treating heart rhythm disorders. It uses ultra-short electrical pulses to target and destroy only the bad heart cells causing irregular beats. Unlike older methods that use heat or cold, PFA is safer because it protects nearby healthy tissues like the esophagus, nerves, and veins. This makes procedures faster and reduces risks.
The technology comes from Boston Scientific’s Farapulse system, brought to Pakistan by Ferozsons Laboratories. PIMS is now the first government hospital in the country to offer this advanced catheter ablation for AF and other complex heart problems.
The minister also opened Phase I of the upgraded PIMS Cardiac Center, built with Rs. 7.2 billion plus extra funds. This center will provide free or low-cost treatment to many patients. These steps aim to modernize public healthcare and bring world-class services to ordinary Pakistanis.
This launch brings new hope to thousands of heart patients in Pakistan. It shows progress in local medical technology and better access to modern treatments.
