The Pakistani government has taken an important step to increase clean energy in Gilgit-Baltistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting where officials shared updates on a 100MW solar energy project. The PC-1 for the main 82MW utility-scale solar plant has been submitted to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval.
This project will greatly help around 1.3 million people in the region by reducing long hours of load shedding. It will provide reliable and clean electricity. Along with the big solar plant, the plan includes installing 18MW of solar systems with battery storage on roofs of 499 government buildings. This part is expected to finish by December.
PM Shehbaz called the 100MW solar initiative a “gift” from the federal government to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. He directed the Power Division to complete the project quickly and with full transparency. He also stressed that payments should only be made after third-party checks to avoid any issues.
The government is focusing on solar power because it is affordable, environment-friendly, and sustainable. This project is part of larger efforts to use renewable energy and reduce reliance on expensive fuels. It will improve daily life, support economic activities, and help fight climate change in the mountainous region.
