Pakistan has taken a big step in its maritime growth. Gwadar Port successfully carried out its first commercial marine bunkering operation from July 9 to 11, 2026. This means the port refuelled a large ship for the first time, opening new services for international vessels.
The operation supplied 2,500 metric tonnes of clean IMO-compliant Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) to the 285-metre-long LNG carrier Enugu. This Bermuda-flagged ship is jointly owned by QatarEnergy, ADNOC, and Vitol. The fuel, refined locally by Cnergyico PK Limited, was delivered safely using the bunker barge Marine Ista.
Key partners included the Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), National Logistics Cell (NLC), Gwadar International Terminals Limited (GITL), Vitol Asia, Pakistan Customs, and local shipping agent Pak Traders Gwadar. Their teamwork ensured smooth and safe refuelling.
This success makes Gwadar Pakistan’s third major port, after Karachi and Port Qasim, to offer full bunkering services. It strengthens Gwadar’s role as a key hub under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Experts say it will attract more ships, create jobs, earn foreign exchange, and support the country’s blue economy goals.
The milestone comes at a good time as shipping routes change due to global issues. It shows Pakistan’s growing port infrastructure and boosts confidence among international investors. Gwadar is now better placed to handle more maritime trade and logistics in the region.
