Shaikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore has achieved a historic milestone by successfully performing the first-ever robotic-assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty (knee replacement) in a public sector hospital in Punjab.
The groundbreaking surgery was led by Prof. Dr. Wasif Ali Shah, Professor and Head of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department, with support from RECH International. The procedure took place under the guidance of Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex Lahore Chairperson and Dean Prof. Dr. Ayesha Humayun and Executive Director Dr. M. Hatif Iqbal.
Many departments worked together to make this success possible. These included the Anaesthesia Department led by Prof. Dr. Mehmood, Radiology experts Prof. Dr. Shaukat and Dr. Mubashir, operating theatre staff, and the full Orthopaedic Surgery team.
Robotic surgery uses advanced technology that gives doctors greater precision, smaller cuts, less pain, and faster recovery for patients compared to traditional methods. Dr. Hatif Iqbal said bringing such modern technologies to government hospitals is a top priority for the institution. This achievement opens the door for more advanced robotic procedures in Punjab’s public healthcare system.
This development is especially important because robotic surgeries are usually available only in expensive private hospitals. Making them accessible in public facilities means ordinary patients can benefit from world-class treatment without high costs.
Experts believe this success will encourage more robotic surgeries in other government hospitals. It also shows Punjab’s growing focus on using technology to improve healthcare quality.
