Hutchison Ports Pakistan is set to bring more than 70 new electric trucks to its Karachi container terminal as part of a $76 million investment planned for 2026 and 2027. The electric trucks will be used to move containers within the port and are expected to make cargo handling cleaner and more efficient.
The company has already received 20 electric trucks and other equipment earlier this year. The Westwell E-Trucks can carry loads of up to 75 tons and have a range of around 150 kilometers when fully loaded. Their batteries can be fast-charged or quickly replaced, making them suitable for busy port operations.
The electric trucks are part of a wider upgrade that includes two electric remote-controlled quay cranes, 17 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes, and electric trailers. The shift to electric equipment will help reduce tailpipe emissions and air pollution at the port.
Hutchison Ports says the project will also improve cargo handling and turnaround times. The investment supports the company’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 while helping strengthen Karachi’s role as a major regional trade and transshipment hub.
