The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a big Rs 750 million solarization project for the financial year 2026-27. This plan aims to make city services more energy-efficient and environment-friendly.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab explained that the project will install solar systems on union committee (UC) buildings, streets, municipal offices, and important public roads. According to him, energy sustainability and climate resilience are now necessary elements of good urban administration. The main goals are to cut dependence on regular electricity, lower running costs, and provide steady services even during power outages.
This is part of KMC’s ongoing efforts to use clean energy. Over the past two years, KMC has already improved street lighting with solar options. They spent more than Rs 110 million on streetlights in the current year. Major roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal, Shahrah-e-Firdousi, and Shahrah-e-Iran have seen better lighting. KMC has also solarized parts of its head office, which reduced electricity bills and helped the environment.
The new plan will expand these efforts to more offices and public spots. It will especially help areas that face frequent load shedding. Mayor Wahab said the focus is on real work rather than just promises. He believes people should judge the administration by visible improvements in roads, parks, lighting, and services.
