Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken a notable step in modernising its education system. The provincial Elementary and Secondary Education Department has formed Pakistan’s first AI and Digital Initiative Unit.
The unit will promote artificial intelligence tools and speed up digital changes across the department’s work. A seven-member team leads it. Special Secretary Development Tashfeen Haider serves as chairperson. Other members include Deputy Director EMIS Noor Sher, assistant directors of IT Muhammad Asif Khan, Adil Maqsood and Syed Azaz Hussain, data analyst Masroor Shah, and AI expert Abdur Rehman.
The group will create technical rules and guidelines for using new technology. It will also examine current systems and suggest ways to replace slow paper-based work with digital processes. Another key task is to design modern applications that make education services clearer, faster and more open to the public.
The unit works directly under the secretary of the education department. Officials say it aims to bring innovation into daily administration, teaching support and decision-making.
This follows earlier efforts by the KP government to expand technology in schools. Earlier this year the province launched its Global Virtual School, which uses online classes and AI tools to reach students, especially in remote areas. Plans for a wider AI Education Authority have also been discussed.
For parents and students, the new unit could mean smoother school services and better use of technology in classrooms over time.
