Pakistan Railways has signed a Freight Forwarding Contract with Russia’s RZD Logistics. This deal creates a clear framework for moving goods across borders and combining different transport modes, such as rail with other options. It marks another practical step in building stronger railway ties between the two countries.
The agreement supports Pakistan’s wider goal of improving regional links, making international trade smoother, and upgrading its railway system. A key part of the plan is a pilot container freight train that would connect Pakistan with Russia and Central Asian nations. Officials hope this service will encourage more goods to travel by rail, which is often cheaper and more reliable than other long routes.
The pilot train faced delays because of tensions in the region and could not start on the original schedule. Both sides, however, remain fully committed. They continue to coordinate and plan to begin the service as soon as conditions allow.
Once running, the cooperation should help expand rail-based trade in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. It will also open doors for sharing technical knowledge and best practices in handling freight.
