Pakistan to Introduce New Safety Standards for EV Batteries

Pakistan is taking an important step to make electric vehicles safer. The Ministry of Industries has directed the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) to develop special safety standards for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs).

This work is happening alongside the Next Generation Energy Storage Policy 2026-2033. The move fills a clear gap. Pakistan already has some rules for small consumer lithium batteries, but EV battery packs work at much higher voltages and capacities. They need stronger safety rules.

The proposed standards will cover several key areas. Battery cells must pass tough abuse tests, including mechanical crushing, overcharging, and extreme heat, without catching fire. Smart Battery Management Systems (BMS) will be required to quickly detect and stop dangerous overvoltage or undervoltage situations that can cause cells to swell.

Fire safety is another major focus. Battery packs must include systems that stop heat from spreading if one cell fails. This may involve special materials such as aerogel or fire-retardant sheets.

The standards will also reflect Pakistan’s real-world conditions. Battery packs must survive a one-metre drop onto concrete without cracks, leaks, or internal damage. They will need strong protection against dust, weather, water, flooding, and monsoon conditions.

These rules support the New Energy Vehicle Policy 2025-2030, which aims for electric vehicles to make up 30 percent of new vehicle sales by 2030. Clear standards will help local companies assemble and manufacture EV batteries safely, while also ensuring that imported batteries meet high quality and safety levels.
