Sindh to Launch EV Taxi Service and Add 50 Double-Decker Buses in Karachi

The Sindh government has approved new steps to improve public transport across the province. These include starting an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, adding 50 double-decker buses in Karachi, and bringing in 1,000 electric buses in phases.

The decisions came during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Tuesday. Officials reviewed ongoing projects and approved new People’s Bus Service routes linking Larkana with Qambar and Qambar with Shahdadkot.

The EV taxi service is set to begin operations in September 2026. The 50 double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi in October 2026. The 1,000 electric buses will join the fleet gradually from the end of 2026.

The minister also directed officials to finish depots for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project on time and speed up the new intercity bus routes. A section of the mixed-traffic lane on Karachi’s University Road will open to cars in September to ease congestion during construction.

Sharjeel Inam Memon said the provincial government is committed to providing safe, clean and reliable public transport. These measures form part of wider efforts to improve daily travel for citizens and promote sustainable mobility in Sindh’s cities.
