Solar Power Overtakes Diesel as Pakistan’s Top Irrigation Energy Source

Pakistan’s agriculture sector is seeing a big energy change. Solar power has now become the largest source of energy for irrigation, replacing diesel. According to the 7th Agricultural Census 2024, solar-powered tubewells and lift pumps have outnumbered diesel systems for the first time.

The census reports 1.29 million solar-powered irrigation systems, compared to 1.1 million diesel-powered and 830,000 electric-powered systems. This marks a historic shift in how farmers water their crops across the country.

Farmers are happily adopting solar pumps because they cut fuel costs dramatically. Diesel prices often rise and create extra expenses, but solar energy is free after the initial setup. This change also reduces Pakistan’s dependence on imported diesel and helps save foreign money.

Solar systems are improving irrigation efficiency and allowing farmers to water fields more reliably. Many growers now use electricity from solar panels instead of waiting for grid power or buying expensive fuel. This is especially helpful in rural areas with unreliable electricity.

The government and private sector have supported this transition through easier financing and awareness campaigns.

This rapid growth in solar irrigation shows Pakistan’s larger shift toward renewable energy. It is expected to boost farm productivity, lower operating costs for thousands of farmers, and support food security in the long run. However, challenges like proper maintenance and water management remain important for sustainable benefits.
