OGDCL Makes Breakthrough with Pakistan’s First Horizontal Oil Well

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has achieved a major milestone by starting oil production from its Pasakhi-13 well, marking the country’s first successful horizontal oil well in a clastic reservoir.

According to a disclosure submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, the well is located in Hyderabad district, Sindh, and is currently producing around 460 barrels of oil per day (BPD). This development highlights a significant step forward in Pakistan’s energy exploration efforts.

The Pasakhi-13 well was drilled to a total measured depth of 2,966 metres. It includes a 546-metre horizontal section, which was carefully drilled using advanced geo-steering technology.

This method helped engineers accurately navigate a narrow drilling window and directly target the oil-bearing reservoir.

OGDCL also used a short string Electric Submersible Pump (ESP), specially designed for horizontal wells, to complete and test the well. This modern approach has improved efficiency and production output.

The company stated that horizontal drilling allows greater exposure to the reservoir, which has resulted in much higher production. In fact, the output from Pasakhi-13 is nearly three times higher than nearby vertical wells operating under similar conditions.

Pasakhi-13 is part of the Pasakhi and Pasakhi North Development and Production Lease, where OGDCL holds a 100 percent working interest. This gives the company full control over operations and production.

This achievement is expected to support Pakistan’s efforts to increase domestic oil production and reduce reliance on imports. It also reflects the growing use of advanced technology in the country’s energy sector.
