Pakistan Receives $1 Billion Saudi Support Amid Rising External Pressure

The State Bank of Pakistan has confirmed that it received $1 billion from Saudi Arabia as part of a $3 billion deposit agreement. The funds were transferred by the Saudi Ministry of Finance with a value date of April 20, 2026.

This is the second installment under the agreement, following an earlier transfer of $2 billion last week. With this payment, the full $3 billion support package has now been completed.

The financial assistance comes after recent diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

During these discussions, Saudi Arabia also pledged an additional $3 billion in deposits and extended its existing $5 billion facility for three years, providing further support to Pakistan’s economy.

The development comes at a time when Pakistan is facing pressure on its external account. The country is expected to repay a $3.5 billion loan to the United Arab Emirates this month, increasing short-term financial needs.

According to official data, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $16.4 billion as of March 27, covering nearly three months of imports. However, rising global oil prices and regional tensions are adding further strain on the economy.

Despite these challenges, Pakistan remains under a stabilisation programme supported by the International Monetary Fund.

Analysts say external financing risks continue to be a concern, especially due to uncertain energy markets and limited access to global capital.
