Gwadar Port could play a much bigger role in Pakistan’s future economic plans as the government moves forward with an idea to build a large Energy City focused on fuel storage, refining, and logistics.
The proposed project aims to attract oil-producing countries to establish facilities for storing crude oil, LNG, and LPG near Gwadar. Officials believe these reserves could help strengthen Pakistan’s energy security and provide backup supplies during emergencies or periods of disruption.
The initiative is also expected to increase foreign investment in Pakistan’s coastal infrastructure and support long-term industrial development around Gwadar.
According to officials, countries in the Gulf region have shown interest in participating. Kuwait is among the countries exploring opportunities linked to energy storage projects, while investment prospects involving Saudi Arabia are also being discussed for refinery development and related infrastructure.
The government sees the project as more than an energy plan. It is part of a wider strategy to transform Gwadar into a regional center for trade, shipping, and energy operations connecting different markets.
Experts say large storage facilities and refineries can improve supply chains, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Pakistan’s position in regional maritime trade.
Alongside the Gwadar project, authorities are also reviewing additional coastal areas for future port development under a broader long-term vision aimed at expanding maritime capacity and supporting economic growth.
If implemented successfully, the Energy City could become one of Pakistan’s most important infrastructure projects, potentially changing the role of Gwadar from a port city into a major regional energy and logistics destination.
