Pakistan’s federal government has approved plans to acquire a new helicopter to support operations linked to the Diamer-Basha Dam project, one of the country’s major hydropower developments.
The helicopter, estimated to cost around Rs5 billion, is expected to assist with security arrangements, emergency response, and transportation needs in the project area.
Officials say the dam site is considered sensitive due to ongoing large-scale construction activity and the presence of important infrastructure and foreign technical staff working on the project.
The approval was granted during a meeting of the Central Development Working Party, where updates related to the project’s revised financial requirements were also reviewed.
The updated cost structure of the dam project has now been forwarded to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council for final consideration and approval.
Authorities believe additional air support could improve response time during emergencies and help strengthen monitoring in difficult mountainous areas surrounding the construction site.
The Diamer-Basha Dam is considered an important project for Pakistan’s future energy and water storage needs.
Once completed, it is expected to support electricity generation, improve water management, and contribute to long-term infrastructure development.
