In a big change for Pakistan’s telecom sector, Telenor Pakistan and Ufone have officially merged into Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML). This creates a stronger mobile operator while Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) will now operate as a separate company. The move follows directions from the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) to ensure fair competition.
The merger brings together network assets, spectrum, and millions of customers from both brands under one roof. Telenor Pakistan has stopped existing as a separate legal entity after final approval from the Islamabad High Court. Ufone has also shifted operations, with its teams moving to the new headquarters.
PTCL, which owns the group, will focus on its fixed-line and other services independently. The boards and CEOs for the mobile business (PTML) and PTCL will remain separate. This structure helps meet regulatory requirements while allowing both parts to grow in their areas.
As part of recent changes, PTCL appointed Mohammad Nadeem Khan as interim CEO for 14 days. The company also updated its board with new directors.
This merger is one of the largest deals in Pakistan’s telecom history. It is expected to improve services, expand 5G coverage, and increase investment in digital infrastructure. Customers may see better network quality and new offerings in the coming months. The combined mobile arm will compete strongly with Jazz and Zong in a market with over 200 million subscribers.
