Pakistan has introduced important new rules for using artificial intelligence (AI) in government work. Under the National Data Governance Policy, any AI or automated systems used by government departments for big decisions must have strong human oversight. This step aims to make AI use safe, fair, and clear as the country increases its use of new technology.
The policy focuses on transparency and accountability. Government agencies must make sure their AI systems are explainable and can be checked. They need to study risks before using AI, especially in areas that affect people’s rights, such as services, benefits, or legal matters. Departments must keep clear records about how the AI works.
A key part of the new rules gives citizens the right to ask for a meaningful human review if an AI decision affects them badly. This helps protect people from mistakes or unfair results made by machines. The policy also requires steps to stop bias and discrimination in AI, and protects personal privacy.
To enforce these standards, the government is creating a special governance framework for AI and other new technologies. High-risk AI systems must be registered before use. The Pakistan Digital Authority will check compliance, carry out audits, and help set technical standards.
This policy comes as Pakistan builds its National AI Policy from 2025 and works to grow digital services. Experts say it balances innovation with safety. It encourages more AI use in public services while keeping government actions trustworthy and answerable to citizens.
