Pakistan has achieved an important milestone in its shipping and green transport sectors. The country welcomed its first-ever Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs) at Karachi Port. The ship, MV Grande Shanghai, arrived at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML).
In a RoRo shipment, vehicles drive directly on and off the ship. This method is faster, cheaper, and safer than loading vehicles into containers. It reduces damage risks and speeds up the whole process. This was the first time Pakistan used this modern system for large-scale vehicle imports.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry called it a big achievement. He said it shows Karachi Port’s improving ability to handle advanced cargo. The success supports Pakistan’s efforts to modernize its ports and logistics system.
This development comes as Pakistan pushes for more electric vehicles. Higher fuel prices and government incentives are encouraging people to switch to cleaner transport. Several international companies are planning to assemble EVs locally. This will create jobs and reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel.
Experts believe RoRo services will make vehicle imports easier and cheaper. It can attract more automakers to use Pakistani ports for big shipments. Karachi Port is growing as a regional logistics hub thanks to these improvements.
The arrival of this large EV shipment highlights Pakistan’s progress in both maritime infrastructure and green mobility. It is a positive step toward a cleaner environment and stronger trade links.
