The Punjab government has given approval for a major new hospital in Rawalpindi. The Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif General Hospital will have 3,000 beds and cost around Rs50 billion. This large healthcare project aims to improve medical services in the area.
The hospital will be built on a 36-kanal piece of vacant land on Peshawar Road in Chohar Harpal, Rawalpindi Cantonment. This land belonged to the Government Transport Service (GTS) and has been unused for about 35 years. It is owned by the Punjab Communications Department.
Officials have sent the project to the Punjab Planning Board for final approval and detailed planning. Construction is expected to start in the 2027-28 fiscal year. Funding will come from both the federal and provincial governments. The project was delayed earlier because of financial challenges.
Once completed, the hospital will offer many modern facilities. It will have 13 operation theaters, a large outpatient department (OPD), and two emergency units. There will be specialized wards for maternity, children, eye care, ENT, kidney, cardiac, medical, orthopedic, and neurosurgery services.
The project also includes a teaching hospital, nursing hostel, doctors’ hostel, modern laboratories, and advanced medical equipment such as a new dialysis system. This will help train new doctors and nurses while providing high-quality care to thousands of patients.
