A group of engineering students from the Netherlands has created Stella Juva, the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. The vehicle comes from Solar Team Eindhoven at Eindhoven University of Technology. It can drive using only solar energy and power its medical equipment at the same time.
Unlike normal ambulances that just carry patients to hospitals, Stella Juva works as a mobile clinic. It has important tools like diagnostic machines, vaccine fridges, and ultrasound devices. This allows doctors and nurses to give treatment and check-ups right in remote villages where fuel and electricity are hard to find.
The ambulance has solar panels on its roof and a 50 kWh battery for storage. On sunny days, it can travel up to 715 kilometres at speeds of 120 km/h. Its strong off-road design helps it reach difficult areas that regular vehicles cannot access easily.
The team worked with Amref Health Africa to design the vehicle. Many African countries face long distances and poor power supply, which makes healthcare difficult. Stella Juva aims to solve these problems by bringing care closer to people. The ambulance will soon go to Kenya for real-world testing.
This project shows how young engineers can use clean technology to help global health challenges. It reduces pollution from diesel ambulances and cuts costs in places with expensive fuel. Experts believe such innovations can change emergency medical services in developing regions.
