Pakistan has won its first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Young boxer Fatima Zahra delivered a strong performance in the women’s 60kg category to make the country proud.
In the quarterfinals, Fatima faced New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson at SEC Hall 5. She controlled the fight from the start and won by a clear unanimous 5-0 decision. All five judges scored the bout in her favour across the three rounds. The victory sent her into the semifinals.
Under Commonwealth Games boxing rules, both boxers who lose in the semifinals receive bronze medals. This means Fatima has already guaranteed Pakistan at least a bronze. It is the country’s first medal of these Games and ends a 12-year drought in Commonwealth boxing medals. She is also the first Pakistani woman to secure a boxing medal at the event.
Fatima, who is in her early twenties and comes from Sargodha, has been boxing since 2018. She is a multiple-time national champion and earlier won a bronze medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games. She opened her Commonwealth campaign with a strong win over Lesotho’s Realboha Segoete.
She will next face Canada’s Marie Al-Ahmadieh in the semifinals. A win would take her into the gold-medal final. Fans across Pakistan are now hoping she can go even further and bring home a higher-coloured medal.
