K-Electric is putting Rs15 billion into improving Karachi’s power network, with a clear focus on the industrial sector. The company’s board chairman, Shaheryar Chishti, shared the plan during a meeting with industrialists at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry.
The money will go toward laying new cables and wires, upgrading grid stations, splitting overloaded feeders, and making other infrastructure improvements. Officials say the goal is to give factories a more reliable and continuous electricity supply. Industry forms the backbone of Karachi’s economy and creates many jobs. Without steady power, both employment and business activity suffer.
K-Electric notes that industrial consumers have not faced load-shedding since 2013. The utility runs more than 2,100 feeders across the city, and over 70 percent of them are already free from scheduled outages. Some industrial zones still experience power quality problems, often because residential areas have grown nearby. New feeders and modern equipment are expected to ease these issues.
Company leaders also said work continues on turning Karachi’s system into a smart grid. This includes smarter meters and better technology that can help detect problems faster and improve overall service.
