Pakistan is working on a new National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy that could generate up to $10 billion from the fisheries sector. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhary shared this during a meeting to review the progress of his ministry and related departments.
The minister said the right policies can unlock the full potential of fisheries and aquaculture. He stressed the need to make business easier in the maritime sector by simplifying rules and listening to the views of companies and other stakeholders. Their suggestions should be included in future plans for sea-based activities.
Officials reported that work on a one-window operation has been completed. Modelled on Khidmat Centres, this system will let businesses get several government services from one place. It should cut delays and make it simpler for investors to work in the maritime field.
The meeting also discussed a 100-acre off-dock terminal at Gwadar Port. This facility will help trade with Central Asian countries and improve cargo handling and logistics links. It is expected to strengthen Gwadar’s role as a key trade gateway.
A $3 million project backed by the Global Environment Facility will protect marine life and coastal areas while promoting sustainable fishing. The minister said growth in the maritime sector must go hand in hand with protecting the environment.
He also asked for a clear plan to use port land recovered from illegal occupation. This land can create more economic value and support Pakistan’s blue economy.
