Pakistan has become the world’s third largest importer of solar panels, showing the country’s fast move towards clean and renewable energy. The latest figures were shared in the Climate Prosperity Plan prepared by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Climate Change.
According to the report, Pakistan imported 17 gigawatts (GW) of solar systems in 2024. This is nearly double the amount imported in 2023. The sharp increase reflects the growing demand for solar power as households, businesses, and industries look for affordable alternatives to high electricity prices and frequent power shortages.
The Climate Prosperity Plan sets ambitious targets for the future. It aims to generate 60% of Pakistan’s electricity from clean energy sources by 2030. By 2040, the country plans to produce 95% of its electricity through renewable energy, including solar, wind, and hydropower.
The report also recommends reducing dependence on expensive imported fossil fuels, upgrading the national electricity grid, and increasing investment in renewable energy projects. These steps are expected to improve energy security, lower electricity costs for consumers, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Pakistan receives abundant sunlight throughout the year, making solar power one of the country’s most promising energy sources.
