The Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department has digitized the province’s birth and death registration system. New rules will make the process simpler and fully online from August 1, 2026.
Under the updated system, citizens can register births and deaths free of charge for up to seven years from the date of the event. Computerized certificates will also be issued without any fee during this period. All earlier registration fees for cases within seven years have been cancelled.
The government has also removed the need for a court decree in cases of delayed registration. This change ends a major hurdle that many families faced earlier.
Authority levels have been clearly defined. The secretary of the relevant Union Council can register births of children up to one year old. The Assistant Director will handle cases of children older than one year and up to seven years. For people older than seven years, the Deputy Director will approve the registration.
The entire process will now run through an online platform. Officials say this move will reduce delays, cut paperwork, and make services more accessible for people across Punjab.
These reforms aim to improve vital records management and help citizens obtain important documents more easily. The digital system is expected to bring greater transparency and efficiency to local government services in the province.
