Quetta is preparing to expand its public transport network with 17 new electric buses. The vehicles will join the city’s Green Bus Service and help connect areas that currently have limited bus coverage.
The announcement was made by Quetta Division Commissioner Zeeshan Lashari during a review meeting on the existing service. Officials reported that 25 Green Buses are already running in the city, including four buses reserved only for women. Female staff work on these women-only buses to make travel safer and more comfortable.
The service currently operates on four routes from 7 am to 9 pm. There are about 40 stops on the Kuchlak route and nearly 50 stops linking the Metropolitan area with Sariab Road. The Green Bus Service has also been extended to Turbat, where four buses are in operation.
Commissioner Lashari stressed the need for better facilities at bus stops and the use of modern technology. He directed officials to develop a mobile app that will show live bus locations, routes and schedules so passengers can plan their journeys more easily.
The new electric buses form part of efforts to improve daily commuting in Quetta and reduce reliance on older, more polluting vehicles. Once they arrive, more residents are expected to gain access to cleaner and more reliable public transport.
